Housing Authority of San Bernardino Awards Language Services Contract

San Diego-Based Interpreters Unlimited to Provide Interpretation and Translation Services for 30,000 San Bernardino County Residents

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 11, 2016—Interpreters Unlimited was recently awarded a three-year contract with the Housing Authority of San Bernardino County to supply telephone interpretation, on-site interpretation and document translation services effective, October 1-September 30, 2019. With this contract, IU will provide interpretation in 37 foreign languages, as well as American Sign Language, and written translations in nine languages to the Housing Authority’s 30,000 residents. The Authority aims to help residents become financially independent as the demand for affordable housing increases.

The terms of the contract indicate that on-site and telephone interpretation services are the primary tools for the Authority’s community outreach initiative. Programs developed by the Authority like, family counseling, career training, job placement and homeownership assistance are in place for all tenants, some of whom have limited English proficiency. Interpreters will travel throughout San Bernardino County to assist residents and staff during these appointments.

Based on the county’s internal research of spoken languages, for this contract, it requires the vendor to supply document translation for the languages that represent 5% of 1,000 people of the county’s total population:

·         Spanish ·         Chinese
·         Japanese ·         Korean
·          Cambodian ·         Thai
·         Vietnamese ·         Taglog
·         Arabic

“Certainly the opportunity to showcase our abilities on a large scale is a tremendous opportunity,” said Shamus Sayed, VP Interpreters Unlimited. “However, the true indication of success is providing a service that helps individuals improve their quality of life; achieve personal goals, benefits and contribution to society in our own backyard. That’s the true benefit.”

The Housing Authority of San Bernardino County is the largest in the country with 2514 units. Its proactive activity is seen in its green initiatives, maintenance operations, social programs and commitment to supplementing the quality of life in the county by job creation, education and other opportunities.
