Interpreters Unlimited to Supply Interpreters for California High Speed Rail Authority Forums to address budgets, engineering, environmental concerns and right-of-way issues during construction of high speed railway

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 24, 2016— Interpreters Unlimited was recently awarded a two-year contract to become the sole provider for the California High Speed Rail Authority, delivering interpretation and translation services to limited English proficiency residents of Central Valley. Under the contract, IU will provide foreign language interpreters for an anticipated 18 public forums to be hosted by HSR in a 12 month period. Written translation of public notices, flyers and other documentation will also be supplied during the construction phase of the high-speed passenger railway system.

The railway system will affect the urban communities of Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, Kings and Kern counties, where the percentage of LEP speakers (specifically Spanish) is higher than the overall percentage of the State of California, as reported in the 2012 Limited English Proficiency Plan. IU will work with HSR’s External Affairs Branch to provide services in 13 languages which include but are not limited to:  Spanish, Japanese, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cantonese, Mandarin, German, Filipino (Tagalog), Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and American Sign Language.

“We’re excited to be a part of history and look forward to helping the High Speed Rail Authority make train schedules and information available to all of California’s second-language residents,” said, Shamus Sayed, vice president of Interpreters Unlimited. The contract with HSR began September 20 and will remain in effect through June 2018.

The railway project is to transport passengers from the San Francisco Bay area to Los Angeles in less than three hours. Construction is expected to be completed by 2029. More information can be found on the California High Speed Rail Authority website: http://www.hsr.ca.gov/
