SAN DIEGO, CALIF., May 24, 2016—The California Department of Motor Vehicles announced its selection for contract in-person language interpretation services in northern California. Interpreters Unlimited, a language company headquartered in San Diego, was selected to provide contracted interpreters for American Sign Language (ASL) and approximately 64 spoken languages in 28 cities in the northern region of the state. The contract will be in effect June 1 through May 31, 2017.

With this contract, Interpreters Unlimited will work with the DMV to improve the communication for those with limited English proficiency, or who are Deaf, or Heard-of-Hearing. Interpretation services will help California residents to comprehend driver safety procedures, rules of the road, processes to renew identification cards, registration, and driver’s licenses.

“We are excited for the opportunity to work with the DMV on this contract,” says Shamus Sayed, vice president of sales & marketing of Interpreters Unlimited. “We will help the DMV to provide comprehensive customer service and to maximize the effectiveness of its education programs, policies and other services. Our efforts will help improve communication with English speakers and those with limited English proficiency. That is what we are truly passionate about.”

In order to compete for the contract, companies had to be a registered small business in California, show proof of interpreter certification, experience, and other credentials, submit a request for proposal, and other requirements as noted by the DMV.
